The happy history hunt – announcing European Heritage days in September 2017

Château Tourlaville, near Cherbourg

Are you planning a visit to Normandy? History lover? You need to know about this important weekend.

We discovered European heritage days ‘Journées européennes du patrimoine‘ when the charming owner of a Normandy château refused the usual payment for a tour of his lovely home.

Journées européennes du patrimoine

Heritage days take place every third weekend in September.  For two days, visits to cultural treasures are either free or at least heavily discounted.  Originally a brilliant idea by the French cultural minister over 30 years ago, now 50 European countries take part.

  • In 2017 the heritage weekend will take place on 16 and 17 September.

A warm welcome

There is an extra bit of enthusiasm from owners and organisers who welcome visitors during this special weekend, keen to share their passion with people who may be new to old things.

Experienced heritage hunters will enjoy the added bonus of unique places usually closed to the public quietly opening their doors.

May all your heritage dreams come true!

The diversity of places to visit is remarkable.  From château to chapel, Roman to industrial archaeology, mines to military, all these and more are represented.

We are sure even the most assiduous Normandy history hunter will uncover a piece of patrimoine they were not aware of.

How to make the most of your weekend

There are two approaches you can take:  1) fierce planning, comfy shoes, a packed lunch and a full tank of petrol or 2) a map, a pin and a sense of adventure.

Both will reveal marvellous Normandy heritage.

As soon as the French ministry for Culture announces who is taking part in 2017 we will let you know.  For now, hold those dates!

16/17 September 2017, see you there!

Normandy Then and Now
Hello! Shamelessly obsessed with Normandy, we are discovering fascinating corners of this delightful region by following a bundle of bewitching vintage postcards. Led by these carte postale, unearthed in brocantes from Le Tréport to Cherbourg, Alençon to Vernon, our travels are uncovering lots of: - hidden histories - awesome art - brilliant brocante (vintage goodies) - amazing architecture - fantastic food and some salacious (if historic) scandal! One of the many attractions of Normandy are the wonderful flea market brocante sales and shops that let everyone bring little bits of Normandy home. We post regular updates on brocante markets in the region plus insider info on where to find the best brocante emporiums.
